Convinced your sneaker collection will make you a millionaire someday? Or not quite ready to admit you can't walk in those Louboutins? Shoe storage is a great way to clear out your closet while keeping hold of your treasured footwear. To keep your shoes in good shape while in storage, shoe care is just as important as selecting the right facility. From shoes cleaning to packing, these tips for long term shoes storage cover everything you need to know.

Preparing for shoes storage

Before you pack your shoes away, it’s important to clean them in preparation for storage. By removing any dirt or moisture, you can prevent your shoes from becoming mouldy or stained over time.

Make sure you have the following shoes cleaning essentials at the ready:

  • Leather cleaner
  • Shoe creams and polish in the colours of your leather shoes
  • Application brushes
  • Suede soap and a suede brush
  • Two buffing brushes – one for dark colours, the other for light
  • Soft cloths
  • Waterproofing spray

As well as carrying out shoes care prior to storage, you should re-clean your footwear and condition the leather every few months to make sure it remains in top condition while it’s not being worn.

Packing shoes for storage

To ensure your shoes retain their shape, stuff them with acid-free tissue paper or insert boot shapers prior to storage and store them on shelves or in individual cubbies. Alternatively, place your shoes in dust bags and store them in their original boxes – be sure to label the boxes for easy retrieval. If you’re short on space, maximise your shoes storage by stacking up the boxes or hang a shoe bag with pockets to the back of your cupboard doors.

Selecting the right long term shoes storage facility

Shoes storage should be cool, dry and free from direct sunlight. If you are storing leather shoes, you might want to opt for a climate-controlled storage unit as it will be better protected from moisture.
